PUBLICATION ETHICS AND MALPRACTICE STATEMENT

MANUSCRIPT ACCEPTANCE AND EVALUATION PROCESS

In Journal of Social Sciences, original studies, translations, research notes, book and thesis evaluations, edition critiques, and studies like that within the scope of Social Sciences are published. Manuscripts to be sent to the Journal of Social Sciences is required to be original manuscripts that fills a gap in the field or a review that evaluates previously published studies and presents new and remarkable views on this subject.

All scientific and legal responsibilities of the manuscripts published in the journal belong to the authors. The subjects that the manuscripts center on both in terms of content and ideas are related to the academic attitude and opinion of the author, and it cannot be associated with the publication policies of the journal. Journal of Social Sciences does not accept any liability.

If the article is derived from the thesis or the symposium paper, this should be indicated by giving footnote to the article title. i.e., This study is derived from the master’s / doctoral thesis titled ………… which was approved by the Institute of ……….. on ………...

Manuscripts to be published in the Journal of Social Sciences must not have been previously published or must not be in the evaluation process of other publication. Papers that were previously presented at a scientific meeting can be accepted, provided this is clearly stated.

A maximum of one work by the same author can be published in any issue.

Manuscripts sent to the journal are first reviewed by the Editorial Board in terms of compliance with journal principles. Manuscripts that do not comply with the Publication Principles of the Journal of Social Sciences will not be evaluated.

Those who want to submit a manuscript for publication to the Journal of Social Sciences must become a member as an author or author/referee from the “New User” section at www.toplumbilimleri.com. It is important for the authors to pay attention to the name-surname spelling rules, since the name used in the membership will be automatically added by the system during the publication phase (e.g., Emrah YAVUZ). It is important to fill in the requested information completely when signing up for the Journal of Social Sciences as a writer or reviewer. In the field title, the author’s work and interests should be listed. e.g., Theology/Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies/Department of Religious Sciences (Sociology of Religion).

Authors whose membership is approved by the editor should upload their manuscripts to the system from the “Manuscript Submission System” or “Submit New Article” section. Uploading the manuscript to the journal online system is accepted as an application.

Articles added to the system of the Journal of Social Sciences should not include the author’s name, surname, title, and institution information, or any reference revealing the identity of the author. Articles should not include headers, footers, and page numbers. In the final version of the manuscripts whose review process have been completed and accepted for publication, information about the authors is added with the cooperation of the authors and the editorial board, based on the “Article Cover Template” sent to the authors at the publication stage.

All processes, from the application to the publication of the article, are carried out electronically.

In the Journal of Social Sciences, the following processes take place after the manuscript is uploaded to the system by the author:

Control of the uploaded manuscript in terms of publication policy, writing rules, scientific content and form is carried out by the editor/assistant editor. Academic objectivity and scientific quality are the most important criteria in the evaluation of manuscripts. As a result of the evaluation, if there are corrections to be made, the manuscript is returned to the author by requesting correction. Manuscript is sent to the reviewers after the approval of the editor. Manuscripts that do not comply with the writing principles will not be sent to the reviewers.

The reviewers determined for the manuscripts in the evaluation process are selected from among those who have expertise in the field and department directly related to the manuscript. Manuscripts that are uploaded to the system for publication are subject to double-blind peer-review evaluation by at least two reviewers. For this reason, the names of the reviewers are not published, and the reports are kept for 5 years. Authors and reviewers should take care keeping their identities confidential. For this purpose, persons such as authors, editors and reviewers who send files to the system should pay attention to the following points regarding the text and files:

• Authors should delete the places where their names and institutions are mentioned in the text (including footnotes and other texts etc.).
• When Microsoft documents are saved, personal information is also saved into the file information (such as document name, user information in correction and annotation notes). Therefore, this personal information should be deleted from the document properties.  
• The author and the reviewer should follow the reviewing process on their own page. The author should wait for the reports from all reviewers (two field reviewers) in case of corrections. The author should make the desired corrections according to the reviewer report sent to her/him and upload it to the system as soon as possible. Reviewers may want to see the manuscript they want to be corrected before it is published. If this request is stated in the report, the corrected version of the manuscript is automatically sent to the reviewer by the system. The maximum period for the reviewers to evaluate the manuscript sent to them is 30 (thirty) days. A new reviewer is appointed for the manuscript that is not reported at the end of this process, and the period is 30 (thirty) days. 
• In order for the manuscript to be accepted by the Journal, it must receive positive evaluation from both referees. The 3^rdreviewer may also be asked to contribute to the evaluation process, if necessary. The manuscript that receives two positive reviewer reports is entitled to be published. The manuscript, which receives a positive and a negative reviewer report, is sent to a third reviewer (journal field reviewer) and whether the manuscript is published or not is determined in accordance with the report of the third reviewer. Authors may object to the reviewer’s report within a reasonable framework and convincing data. Objections are reviewed by the journal management and, if deemed appropriate, a different reviewer (or reviewers) can be consulted on the subject. Journal editors meticulously follow the corrections given by the reviewers and may decide to publish or not publish a manuscript accordingly. Manuscripts that are not accepted for publication are not returned to their authors.

Article Processing Charge

Tax, design, promotion of the articles to international indexes, and purchase of the DOI number are done by Asos Eğitim Bilişim Danışmanlık. The manuscript submitted to the Journal of Social Sciences requires a deposit of 400 TRY in order to be initiated the reviewer process.

This fee is paid before the start of the reviewer process, according to the information message sent by the journal after the manuscript submission to the system by the author. After the processing fee is paid, the receipts from the authors are examined by the journal management, and the reviewer process is started accordingly. Fees paid for manuscripts that fail the reviewer process (cannot be published) will not be refunded.

PUBLICATION ETHICS

The publication processes adopted by the Journal of Social Sciences form the basis for the development and distribution of information in an objective and respectful manner. The processes implemented in this direction are directly reflected in the quality of the work of the authors and the institutions that support the authors.

Ethics Committee Permission

Ethics Committee Permission is required since January 2022 and articles that do not receive Ethics Committee Permission will not be accepted. In studies that require ethics committee permission, information about the permission (name of the committee, date and number) should be added at the end of the article as follows “Ethics committee approval of this article was taken from ............. (Name of the committee), with ....... (Date), ......... (Number).” In case reports, information about the informed voluntary consent/consent form being signed should be included within the method section of the article. 

Studies that require the Ethics Committee Permission are as follows:

• All kinds of research carried out with qualitative or quantitative approaches that require data collection from the participants by using survey, interview, focus group work, observation, experiment, interview techniques,
• The use of humans and animals (including material/data) for experimental or other scientific purposes,
• Clinical studies on humans,
• Animal studies,
• Retrospective studies in accordance with the personal data protection law,

              Moreover:

• Stating that an “informed consent form” was taken in case reports,
• For the use of scales, surveys and photographs belonging to others, permission must be obtained from the owners, and it must be stated from which institution, on which date and with which decision or number.
• It should be stated that the intellectual and artistic works used are in compliance with the copyright regulations.
• If the study requires the use of human and animal subjects, it should be declared that the study was carried out in accordance with the international declaration, guideline, etc.

Note: Non-university researchers can also apply to the Ethics Committees in their regions.

The ethical duties and responsibilities listed below have been prepared, considering the guidelines and policies published as open access by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Our journal’s publication ethics are based on publication ethics presented by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA).

Peer-reviewed studies embody and support the scientific method. At this point, it is important that all participants of the process (authors, readers, researchers, publisher, reviewers, and editors) comply with the standards for ethical principles. The Journal of Social Sciences expects all stakeholders to bear the following ethical responsibilities within the scope of publication ethics.

AUTHORSHIP

• All references should be listed in the bibliography.
• Plagiarism and false data should not be included.
• The same manuscript or research should not be attempted to be published in more than one journal.  

Actions against scientific research and publication ethics are as follows:

1. a) Plagiarism:Presenting ideas, methods, data, practices, writings, figures or works of others as their own work, in whole or in part, without attribution in accordance with scientific rules.
2. b) Falsification:Producing data that is not based on research, to edit or change the presented or published work based on false data, to report or publish them, presenting research that has not been done as if it has been done.
3. c) Distortion:Distorting the research records and obtained data, to present the methods, devices and materials not used in the research as if they were used, not evaluating the data that are not suitable for the research hypothesis, to manipulate the data and/or results in order to fit the relevant theory or assumptions, to distort or shape the research results in line with the interests of the people and organizations that is received fund.
4. d)Duplicate publication:Presenting more than one work containing the same results of a research as separate works in associate professor examination evaluations and academic promotions.
5. e) Salami slicing:Presenting the results of a research as separate works in the evaluations of associate professorship exams and in academic promotions by improperly disaggregating the results of the research and making multiple publications without attribution.
6. f) Authorship misconduct:Including people who do not contribute actively among the authors, and not including people who have active contributions, changing the order of authors without justification and inappropriately, removing the names of those who contributed actively from the work at the time of publication or in subsequent editions, using his influence to include her/his name among the authors, although s/he does not have an active contribution.
7. g) Other types of ethical violations:Not clearly stating the funding people, institutions or organizations and their contributions to the research in the publications of the research carried out with support; not following the ethical rules in research on humans and animals; not respecting the rights of patients in publications; sharing the information in a work that you assigned as a reviewer before publishing; sharing and misusing the resources, places, facilities and devices provided or reserved for scientific research, accusing with unfounded, improper and intentional ethical violation (YÖK Instruction of Scientific Research and Publication Ethics, Article 8).

Journal of Social Sciences adopts the principles of COPE in dealing with such allegations and in the process of resolve them and tries to work out the allegations immediately.  

AUTHORS’ RESPONSIBILITIES

• All authors in the study must make significant contribution to the study. In articles with two or more authors, the contribution rates of the authors should be stated at the end of the article. i.e., 1. Author 50%, 2. Author 50% or 1. Author 40%, 2. Author 30%, 3. Author 30%.
• It is necessary to declare that all data in the article are accurate and original.
• The authors should state at the end of the article that they do not have any personal or financial conflicts of interest with other people and institutions related to the research.
• An acknowledgement statement should be included at the end of the article, if there are institutions and organizations that support and contribute to the study.
• All authors must ensure retraction and correction of inaccuracies.  

REVIEWERS’ RESPONSIBILITIES

• Evaluations should be objective.
• Reviewers should not have a conflict of interest with the research, authors and/or research funders.
• Reviewers should remark the relevant published, but not cited works.
• Reviewed articles should be kept confidential.
• Reviewers must submit a clear and constructive evaluation report on the work within the specified time.

EDITORIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Editors have full responsibility and authority to accept or reject an article.  
• Editors should not have a conflict of interest regarding the accepted or rejected articles.
• Only the articles that will contribute to the field should be accepted.
• Editors should support the publication of corrections or withdrawal when errors are found.
• Editors should keep the reviewers confidential and prevent plagiarism and false data.  
• The editor and the editorial board keep the referee evaluation process confidential and do not share it with third parties.
• Regardless of religion, language, race, gender, nationality, seniority or institutional affiliation, the editor and the editorial board display an impartial attitude to every work submitted to the journal and approved for publication.
• While determining the reviewers, special attention is paid that they are not from the same institution as the authors.
• The peer-review process is at the heart of the success of scientific publication. It is part of our commitment protecting and improving the peer-review process, and the Journal of Social Sciences has an obligation to assist the scientific community in all aspects of publishing ethics, particularly in cases of problematical, duplicate publications, or plagiarism.

COMPLAINTS AND ALLEGATIONS

When the reader notices an important error or inaccuracy in an article published in the Journal of Social Sciences or has any criticisms about the editorial content (plagiarism, duplicate articles, etc.), they can make a complaint by sending an e-mail to the address toplumbilimleridergisi@gmail.com. We welcome complaints as they provide an opportunity for us to improve, and we aim to respond quickly and constructively.  Journal of Social Sciences aims to solve the complaints and appeals according to the principles of COPE.

PLAGIARISM DETECTION

All of the studies submitted to the Journal of Social Sciences and passed the editorial control are checked by the Advanced Plagiarism Detection Software intihal.net (http://intihal.net/) before being sent to the reviewer. A maximum similarity rate of 25% is accepted in the plagiarism report.

Authors submitting articles to the Journal of Social Sciences are deemed to have declared that they have not committed any ethical violation. The works of authors who are found to have plagiarized are not included in our Journal. Authors can access the report by clicking on the similarity ratio on the system.

PUBLICATION PERIOD

Journal of Social Sciences is an international-indexed peer-reviewed journal published biannually (30 June - 31 December), except special and additional issues.

PUBLICATION LANGUAGE

The publication language of the Journal of Social Sciences is Turkish. However, manuscripts in English and Arabic can be included in the Journal of Social Sciences, not exceeding one third of each issue. Manuscripts sent in other languages can also be published with the approval of the Editorial Board. In Arabic articles, a reference list in Roman script should also be included. 

CITATION AND REFERENCE SYSTEM

Journal of Social Sciences requires APA 7 to be used in citation and bibliography.

OPEN ACCESS POLICY

Journal of Social Sciences provides instant open access to its content. All the content published in the Journal of Social Sciences is open to the access of not only academic institutions and organizations, but also to anyone with internet access. With the open access policy, it is aimed that the published articles and studies contribute to the development of science and scientific method, and that everyone can access scientific information easily and without paying any fee.

ARCHIVING

Articles and manuscripts sent to the Journal of Social Sciences and information and documents belong to them are kept indefinitely for archiving under the supervision of the journal management.

COPYRIGHT

Manuscripts to be published in the Journal of Social Sciences must not have been previously published or must not be in the evaluation process of other publication. 

Authors whose manuscripts are published in the Journal of Social Sciences own the copyright of their manuscripts. Manuscripts published in the journal are licensed under Creative Commons — Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International — CC BY-NC 4.0). The CC BY-NC 4.0 license permits the sharing, adaptation, copying and reproduction of the work for non-commercial use, provided that appropriate attribution is made to the original work.
